29 days in the Dominican Republic Hola! Oh My! What a wonderful time we had in the Dominican Republic. We spent 29 days in an apartment (owned by my sister’s family and in-laws) in a cute little town called Cabarete. It is about 40 miles from Puerto Plata on the North Shore. If you have ever wanted to Kite Surf, this is the place. WOW! The sea of colours out on the water some days was impressive. The speed, the agility, the height...OH MY! Not for the faint of heart. It was brilliant to watch them all, right from beginners to advanced. Always something to see. In the apartment complex where we stayed, there are about 25 apts in total. People from all over the world own there and rent them out (if you are interested in renting there just let me know...I have an inside to some great deals–LOL). We met people from France, Scotland, New Brunswick, Quebec (my French got so much better), New York, Florida, Ontario and Chile. The town itself is filled with people from all over the world. What an experience! We went down to help get the apartment rental ready, you know put up some pictures, buy some furniture, stuff like that. What an experience that was. Like, I had to buy those white plastic shelving for the closets, WD40 and stuff like that. Well I will tell you, not having a great command of the Spanish language made it so much FUN! I mimed my way through an entire hardware store experience, giggling the entire time. We learned so much about the Dominican culture, their history, their farming, and their people. It was amazing to expose the girls to that type of environment. They learned foreign currency, third world economics and they had an hour of Spanish lessons almost each day. (Okay so it was from the Scottish speaking man that lived next door, but hey, he spoke 6 languages he was a brilliant teacher.) Thanks Steven! The weather was tropical, it would rain in the AM and by the time we were ready for our day it would be about 25 C (that is about 80 F). We spent the days at the pool, at the beach and shopping for the apartment. We played with the other families in the complex and made some wonderful lifelong friends. We visited the Cabarete Caverns, swan in an underground pool (yes, in one of the caves), we rode to the top of sky tram in Puerto Plata to walk the gardens, we shopped in the outdoor market in Puerto Plata, I shopped in Santiago (my hardware store experience), we visited Playa Dorado, Sosua Beach and Dywayne and the girls went to the 27 Charcos (www.27charcos.com). Please know that I do not tell you all this to brag, but only to inspire. It is my dream that one day, all our friends and family are living the exact life they have always wanted. If you want to travel the world, you can. If you want to travel only once a year, you can. If you want to live in a better house, please do so. It is our hope that our story will inspire you to be the best that you can possibly be, to live the life that you truly deserve and to dream big dreams. Anyone want to join us in Hawaii next winter? |

Traveling update Wow can you believe it is February already? We have been on our adventure now for over 6 months. Feels like just yesterday we were waving goodbye in Edmonton. Many of you have been asking for an update as to where we are going next and when or if we will be through your city. So here is what we are thinking. We are in Florida until Early April. The head up the East Coast through Savannah, GA, Washington, D.C., Atlantic City, NJ, New York, NY, through Maine and then into Canada. We will be touching each Canadian capital city and any other that are recommended to us. This is where you all come in. We need your advice. We would like you to recommend places for us to visit. We are willing to go off the beaten path for something fun and exciting. People we must meet, places we must see, restaurants we must eat at, stuff like that. Share with us your experience so we may have an ever richer experience of our own. What do you say, want to help us and tell us where to go? |

~ the primary mode of transport is the “Moto-Concho”, small motorbikes. EVERYONE rides them...we even saw a baby cow (maybe about 4 months old) being carried down the highway with 3 other people on one tiny motorbike!! ~ The bigger your automobile the more “right to the road” you have. ~ Pedestrians? What pedestrians? ~ Drama skills are necessary for those of us whose Spanish needs some work! |

Where to after Canada? We are looking at Hawaii as our next destination. I met a couple from “the Big Island” last weekend in LA, they own a taxi company and they are willing to help us find an apartment to rent. I love my life! |
